The Indoor Garden 3
This week we take all the great stuff we have been finding around the house, at local stores, and in some cases, online, and put them into action. This quick start guide will get you on the road to your very own home indoor garden. It may be helpful to read it through before you start.
- Soak your seeds in small cups covered with plenty of water.
- Add 4 cups of water to the gallon of soil mix and set aside.
- Allow minimum 6 hours for the seeds to soak.
- Fold the cheesecloth (or the paper you chose) just a little larger than the tray to serve as a cover. Soak these in water when seeds are ready for planting.
- In the bottom of each tray, mix ½ teaspoon of kelp with 1 tablespoon of compost.
- Fill each tray with 1 ¼ cup of moistened soil mix. Level the soil leaving about ¼ inch to top of tray for seeds and cloth cover.
- Drain the seeds from small cups and spread over soil so they touch each other but do not overlap.
- Press the soaked cloth/paper cover into the tray so it is in contact with the seeds.
- Place planted tray in dark warm place for 4 days.
- On day 5, remove the cover. Water the tray and place on a well-lit windowsill.
- Once a day, water with 2-4 tablespoons per tray.
- After 3-4 days of growth and greening in the light, harvest shoots with a scissors.
Be sure to wash the harvested greens and remove any remaining hulls. Chop the greens into ¼ and ½ inch pieces and toss in a salad. Bon Appétit! Text a picture of your garden to 218-851-9626 and we’ll share your success with others. Enjoy this fun activity year-round and make the SHIFT today!
